Fall Checklist!
With our first taste of winter this past weekend, it’s a good time you’re ready for cold weather when it decides to stick around. Here’s a quick checklist to run through to ensure you’re prepared:
- Clean gutters
- Make sure gutters are well secured to the home in preparation for snow and ice weight
- Remove downspouts (be sure to put them back in place in spring)
- Caulk cracks on windows, sidings, anywhere where there are seams on the home
- Replace any broken glass windows or doors
- Check roof for loose or damaged shingles and replace them
- Insulate attics and other similar spaces, but make sure vents are clear and clean
- Check door seals and weather strip doors and windows
- Tune-up your heating systems- replace filters, cleaning air ducts, etc. Have a professional do it if you’re not sure how to check and clean the heating unit.
- Remove window AC units
- Check outdoor lights, replace bulbs in preparation for it being dark earlier and longer
- You may need to protect plumbing (especially in older homes) by checking exposed pipes and insulating if needed. Check with a plumber to see if this is needed in your home.
- Remove hoses and turn off exterior faucets prior to first freeze
- Test fire and carbon monoxide alarms in preparation for heating and fireplace usage
- Have chimney checked and cleaned before using
- Clean out your dryer vent
- Check with professional about what plants and shrubs may need to be cut back in the fall
- Seasonal options: remove screens from windows and doors and replace with the storm door and windows if applicable
- Make sure you have a good shovel, tune up your snowblower, winterize your lawnmower and weedwacker
- Mentally prepare yourself for a fun, snowy Minnesota winter!
